Boost Your Racing and Recovery with Gatorade G Series Pro

Gatorade G Series ProI recently had the opportunity to try some of Gatorade’s G Series Pro products. Like the regular Gatorade G Series and G Series FIT, Gatorade G Series Pro products are available in 3 different categories: 01 Prime, 02 Perform, and 03 Recover.

Gatorade offers 3 types of G Series 01 Prime: Prime Pouch, Carb Energy Drink, and a Nutrition Bar.

There are 3 types of G Series 02 Perform: Endurance Formula (ready-to-drink), Endurance Formula Powder, and Gatorlytes Electrolyte Mix.

Finally, there are 2 types of G Series 03 Recover: G Series Pro Recover and Protein Recovery Shake.

I tried the Carb Energy Drink, which Gatorade recommends drinking 60 minutes or more before competition or training.  It comes in a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle, containing 330 calories and 82 g of both quickly and slowly absorbed carbohydrates for carbohydrate loading before long training runs or events.  It comes in Orange, Fruit Punch, and Grape Flavors.  I tried the Fruit Punch flavor.  It was somewhat viscous, compared to the usual. lower carb energy drinks, but tasted good.

I also tried the ready-to-drink version of the Endurance Formula.  Endurance Formula is similar to Gatorade G Series 02 Perform (aka, Original G), but has twice the sodium and three times the potassium to help replenish electrolytes in long endurance events.  It comes in 24 oz (720 ml) bottles that contain a total of 150 calories and 42 g of carbohydrates.  It comes in Orange, Fruit Punch, and Lemon Lime flavors.

Endurance Formula is provided at over 250 elite endurance events around the U.S. each year, including the Boston Marathon.  If you plan to run one of these events, you should practice drinking Endurance Formula during your training runs to make sure that it works well for you.  If you find you don’t like it, you can make other arrangements for your hydration during the race.  You don’t want to have any unexpected problems during the race.

I tried Orange flavor Endurance Formula.  I normally drink the Lemon-Lime flavor on my training runs, which I mix from the Endurance Formula Powder.  I prefer taste of the Orange flavor to the Lemon-Lime, but I think that the Orange flavored powder is a bit hard to find in stores.  Typically, the Lemon-Lime flavor is the one that is offered on the course during races.

I also tried Gatorade’s Protein Recovery Shake.  The 16 oz (480 ml) shake contains 400 calories, including 66 g of carbohydrates and 30 g of protein.  It is designed to help your muscles refuel and rebuild after a workout or race.  Gatorade recommends drinking half the container within 30-60 minutes after finishing your training run or race and drinking the rest 1-2 hours later.  The Protein Recovery Shake comes in Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry flavors.  I tried the Chocolate flavor.  It tasted like very thick chocolate milk.  Many nutrition experts recommend skim or low-fat chocolate milk as a recovery drink after workouts or races.

If the thought of drinking a thick shake after your workout or race doesn’t appeal to you, you might prefer Gatorade G Series Pro Recover. It’s a protein and carbohydrate recovery drink that tastes more like the Gatorade energy drinks that you are used to.  It comes in a 16 oz (480 ml) bottle and contains 40 g of carbohydrates and 16 g of protein, close to the ideal 4:1 ratio that sports nutrition experts recommend.

The Gatorlytes Electrolyte Mix is designed for athletes who have experienced cramping before.  These are typically people who have a high sweat rate and have very salty sweat. If you are one of these people, you can mix a packet of Gatorlytes with 20 oz (590 ml) of Gatorade 02 Perform and drink it 30-60 minutes before your event.  It contains 0 calories, 780 mg of sodium, and 400 mg of potassium.

The Gatorade G Series Pro products are available for sale at GNC stores, at specialty retailers, some on-line stores like Amazon.com.  You probably won’t find them in your local grocery store.

Have you tried Gatorade G Series Pro products?  How did they work for you? Tell me in the comments.
