Highlights from 2011 ING NYC Marathon Expo
I had a chance to check out the ING NYC Marathon Expo the other day. I didn’t run the race, but my brother-in-law did. I’m planning to run it next year, if I manage to get a guaranteed entry into the race.
Here are some of the highlights from the Expo:
MOTOACTV:
Motorola’s MOTOACTV fitness monitor looks great. I got a chance to see a demo and it was impressive. It transitions easily between multiple sports. It plays your favorite music, automatically finds which tunes motivate you to run faster and burn more calories, has a GPS to measure speed, distance, and altitude outdoors and accelerometers to measure distance indoors.
The MOTOACTV comes with Motorola SF200 Sports Headphones, a MOTOACTV Clip, and and Wall Charger with Data Cable. Optional wired SF500 headphones and wireless SF700 headphones both monitor your heartrate through your ears, without a chest strap. MOTOACTV units start at $250.
PowerBar:
PowerBar has created a couple of new flavors of their popular PowerBar Energy Blasts, Cola and Lemon, to add to the original favors of Raspberry and Strawberry Banana. The Cola favor, as you might expect, contains 75 mg of caffeine per pouch (9 pieces). The Strawberry Banana flavor 40 mg of caffeine per pouch. The other flavors are caffeine-free.
PowerBar also has two new PowerBar Energy Gel flavors, Berry Blast and Kona Punch. Berry Blast has 25 mg of caffeine per gel packet, while Kona Punch is caffeine-free. PowerBar Energy Gels have a 2:1 ratio of glucose to fructose to deliver more energy to your muscles and contain 4 times more electrolytes than other energy gels.
Gatorade:
Gatorade has some new G Series Pro 01 Prime Carb Energy Chews coming out soon, available in Orange and Fruit Punch flavors. They had samples available at the Expo. Unlike some of the other products on the market, these are very soft chews and dissolve easily in your mouth. They are packaged 4 chews to a package and contain a total of 120 calories and 31 g of carbohydrates. Both flavors are very good. Watch for these to appear on the shelves of your specialty sports retail stores.
I also had a chance to talk at the Expo with Lisa Esposito, MS, RD, CSSD, Sports Dietitian at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Lisa told me that Gatorade will be eliminating the confusion around having two Recover drinks with different formulations, by settling on the higher carb, G Series Pro 03 Recover Drink. This product not only provides more carbs than the standard G Series Recover Drink, it tastes better, too. Look for this change to happen around June 2012.
CEP:
CEP has a new CEP RXOrtho Achilles Brace out that provides some support and cushioning for your Achilles Tendon. It massages and protects the tendon with an integrated silicone inlay to accelerate recovery from Achilles tendonitis and Achillobursitis. It comes in 6 sizes for a custom fit and costs about $60-75.
Odwalla:
Odwalla recently released a new Super Potein Mango drink with 20 g of soy protein per bottle. It also provides 50 percent of the daily recommended amount of calcium and 150 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamins B12 and B6. Key ingredients in the drink include apple juice, mango puree, orange juice, and banana puree. I tasted it at the Expo and it was very good.
Odwalla also had some of its Summertime Lime Limeade on hand. It is made from lime juice, water, and organic evaporated cane juice. Very refreshing.
Did you go to the ING NYC Marathon Expo? What were your favorite new products? Tell me in the comments.
