Racing a Half Marathon, Fueled by SuperStarch

Recently, I had the opportunity to try some of Generation UCAN’s sports nutrition products containing SuperStarch. Generation UCAN’s products provide a long lasting supply of energy, rather than the quick blood sugar spike provided by sugar-based energy drinks. They also help to promote fat-burning during training and racing. They are used by marathoner Meb Keflezighi and other top athletes to maximize their performance.
I got a sample of Generation UCAN’s Sports Drink and their Protein-Enhanced Sport Drink from Generation UCAN’s Sales Manager Chris Pannone at the New York City Marathon Expo. Chris qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in his very first marathon, running a 2:18:05.
After I turned 50 recently, I was on a mission to qualify for a guaranteed entry into the 2012 New York City Marathon. To qualify, I needed to run a half marathon in less than 1:40 or a marathon in less than 3:30 by January 31, 2012. While I had recently run a 3:25 marathon, it was before I turned 50, so it didn’t count.
I signed up for half marathon that was scheduled on the day after my 50th birthday. I drank a Cranberry-Raspberry flavored Generation UCAN Sports Drink about 30 minutes before my race and Chocolate flavored Protein-Enhanced Sports Drink after the race. I had plenty of energy throughout the race and finished in 1:35 on a hilly course, out-sprinting two runners in their mid-20’s at the finish.
I liked the Generation UCAN Sports Drinks and would use them again. They come packaged in single-serving packets that are mixed with water. Chris Pannone indicated that bulk packaging with a scoop, similar to other sports drink mixes, is on the way.
The Generation UCAN drinks are fairly think and need to be well mixed before drinking. As with any sports drink, if you are considering using it in a race, you should practice with it during your training runs to make sure that you like it and that it doesn’t upset your stomach.
Have you tried Generation UCAN’s products? How did they work for you? Tell me in the comments.
Disclaimer: I received a free sample of Generation UCAN’s Sports Drinks for evaluation.
