Breakfast of Champions?

MochaIf you want to lose weight, diet experts recommend that you include some protein in each of your meals, especially breakfast.  During my training for last year’s Boston Marathon, I lost about 10 pounds by starting my day with a cup of coffee mixed with a scoop of chocolate protein powder and some artificial sweetener.

Although it might not sound very appetizing, it tastes like a thick mocha coffee.  Be sure to stir it well to prevent clumps from forming.  You can either put the protein powder in the cup first and pour the hot coffee over it and stir, or add the powder slowly to the coffee, while stirring vigorously.  It gives me a low-calorie, high-protein start to the day and keeps me from feeling hungry for several hours.

The caffeine in the coffee also helps increase your metabolism and will help you burn a few more calories.  For me, it also tends to reduce my appetite for breakfast, even without the protein powder.  By adding the protein powder, I’m “doubling down” on my morning hunger.

When I’m traveling, I take a small Tupperware container of protein powder with me, so that I can make it in my hotel room.  This keeps me from pigging out on the carb-filled free breakfast at the hotel.

If you plan to do a long run lasting more than an hour, you might want to choose something with more carbs for breakfast, so that you have plenty of fuel for your run.

Have you tried something like this?  How has it worked for you?  Tell me in the comments.
