With the holidays fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about some gifts for the runners on your list (and maybe to drop some hints for yourself). Here are some holiday gift ideas from $150 and $400.
If your runner is looking for the lastest in GPS technology, he might like the stylish Garmin Forerunner 110, which runs about $250 with a heart rate monitor and about $200 without. It doesn’t have the interval workout or the virtual running partner features of some of the other models, but it’s small and looks like a real watch, not a wrist-top computer.
If they are a serious runner who wants a sleek, full-featured watch, then the Garmin Forerunner 405 might be a good choice for him. It has a touch-sensitive bezel that allows you to change the display without pushing a lot of buttons. It’s currently selling at about $220 with a heart rate monitor and about $210 without, which makes it a better buy than the Garmin Forerunner 110.
Garmin recently came out with two new models, the Garmin Forerunner 210 and the Garmin Forerunner 410, which both have an enhanced touch bezel (some users have complained about the over-sensitive bezel on the Garmin Forerunner 405), a more sensitive antenna, and larger displays. The Garmin Forerunner 210 sells for about $300 with a heart rate monitor and the Garmin Forerunner 410 sells for about $375 with a heart rate monitor and about $325 without.
If the runner in your life is a serious triathlete, he might like the Garmin 310XT, a waterproof multi-sport GPS watch with a heart rate monitor. It runs about $400. Most of the other GPS watches are only-water resistant. That’s probably not going to cut it if you are swimming in open water. I once lost a Polar Heart Rate Monitor to a driving rainstorm.
If your runner spends a lot of time sitting at a desk, they might like a standing desk. Recent studies have found that even if you exercise regularly, the more time you spend sitting at desk, the higher risk you have of cardiovascular disease.
If the runner in your life already has a treadmill, they might like to turn it into a treadmill desk, which is designed so that you can walk slowly while doing your work. It’s a great way to stay active and burn a few calories, while working on the computer or making phone calls.
