7 Things to Look For in an Energy Gel
When you are choosing an Energy Gel, it’s important to consider several factors before you buy:
Electrolytes - Does it contain contain enough sodium and potassium to help you replace your sweat losses (or are you getting your electrolytes from another source). PowerBar Gels have more electrolytes than the others. CLIF SHOT’s new formula has increased the electrolytes in its gels by up to 50%.
Protein - Are you looking for a gel that contains protein? Some studies have shown that a carb/protein can improve performance in endurance events.
Caffeine - Do you want a gel that contains caffeine or not? How much do you want? Caffeine can improve performance, but may sometimes cause other problems. You don’t want to be setting new speed records for running from porta-potty to porta-potty.
Viscosity - Do you like a thick or a thin gel? I prefer a thinner gel. My test is whether I think I could get it down without water. CLIF SHOT has recently introduced a new thinner formula for its gels. GU Energy gels are typically much thicker.
Flavor/Taste - This is an individual preference. I tend to like “clean” flavors like Vanilla, Citrus, or Strawberry, that don’t linger in my mouth for several miles. Other people love stronger flavors like Chocolate, Mocha, or Espresso.
Packaging - The gel has to be easy to open. Ideally, it should have a package that stays in one piece, even after you open it, like CLIF SHOT Gel’s Litter Leash. My friends who clean up after marathons say that the sticky tear off tabs from thousands gels are the hardest thing to get off the pavement after the race.
Natural/Organic - Eating a gel not necessarily a “natural” thing to do, so it’s nice to have a gel made from natural and/or organic ingredients, rather than something cooked up in a lab.
Your Next Race - Once you know what your favorite energy gels are, other thing you should consider is which gels will be offered on the course in your next race. If they are ones that you like, you are all set. Make sure that you grab the flavors that you prefer. If they are going to be a type that you just can’t stand, you might want to make arrangements to carry a few more of your favorite gels.
