Are Two Carbs Better Than One?

PowerBar Energy GelRecent research has shown that the body can absorb more carbohydrates per hour if they are in a 2:1 ratio of glucose to fructose.  The body can only absorb about 60 g of glucose and 30 g of fructose per hour, but when they are mixed in a 2:1 ratio of glucose to fructose, it can absorb 90 g per hour.

This is because glucose and fructose are digested using different mechanisms in the body.  The glucose/fructose mixture also passes through the stomach more quickly, reducing the chance of a stomach upset.

This is important for athletes in long-duration events lasting more than 2.5 hours, like marathons and triathlons, which can deplete your glycogen and require you to refuel with carbohydrates in order to maintain performance.

PowerBar’s energy gels, gel blasts, and energy bars are formulated with a 2:1 ratio of glucose to fructose (branded as C2MAX), so depending on what form you prefer to get your carbs in you can get a full load of carbs from PowerBar.

Have you tried PowerBar products with C2MAX?  Do you think they make a difference in long events?  Tell me in the comments.
