Conventional wisdom is that running wears down your knees and will lead to osteoarthritis of the knee joint. Since, I’m missing some of the cartilage in my right knee, I’m a potential candidate for early osteoarthritis. Should I stop running?
Recent studies say that I shouldn’t. MRI scans of marathoners knees showed no major new internal damage after 10 years. A study of middle-aged distance runners in their 50’s and 60’s showed that 20 years later, when they were in their 70’s and 80’s, their knees were actually in better shape than non-runners of the same age.
How are your knees holding up? Have you suffered a knee injury? Tell me in the comments.
