The Best New Diet Book
In my opinion, the best diet books are not about gimmicks or instant fixes. The best diet books are the ones that help you to change your behavior in a way that you can sustain for the rest of your life.
My #1 choice is a relatively new book, The Skinny on Losing Weight Without Being Hungry, by Dr. Louis Aronne. Dr. Aronne is the Director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is probably best known as Dave Letterman’s doctor.
The Skinny is a science-based approach to appetite control. It’s about teaching your body to recognize that you are full and don’t need to eat any more food. It emphasizes easy-to-follow techniques for increasing your feeling of “fullness” (eating a high protein breakfast, eating vegetables and proteins before starches, etc.). It takes a phased approach to weight loss, to prevent you from “falling off the wagon”.
I’ve tried some of the techniques in The Skinny and it worked for me. I dropped about 5 lbs in 3 weeks, or about 3% of my bodyweight, with very little effort or discomfort. The Skinny is coming out in paperback on March 30 and will sell for under $10. You can’t miss at that price.
Here’s a four-minute interview with Dr. Aronne on CBS’s The Early Show with Harry Smith:
I’ll share a couple of other great diet books in my next post. Let me know what your favorites are in the comments.
