More Great Diet Books

Besides my first choice for the best new diet book, The Skinny, here are a couple of other great books that focus on behavioral changes that will help you to lose weight permanently.

Mindless EatingMindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think by Brian Wansink shares some of the research into why we eat too much.  Dr. Wansink is the Director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab. His philosophy is that “the best diet is the one you don’t know you’re on.”

In many cases, our mind fools us into eating more than we should.  For example, studies have shown that when we use larger plates, we eat 25-30% more food.

Here are some of the suggestions from Mindless Eating, based on the research that Dr. Wansink and his colleagues have done:

  • Try to eat 20% less than what you think will make you full
  • Put everything on the plate before you eat it
  • Use small plates and bowls and tall glasses
  • Leave serving dishes in kitchen, except vegetables or fruit
  • Make tempting foods hard to get at
  • Pace yourself with the slowest eater at the table
  • Don’t eat in front of the TV, at your desk or computer, or in the kitchen
  • Pick any two: appetizer, alcohol, or dessert
  • Don’t eat directly from the package
  • Stay away from buffet tables and snack bowls
  • Eat healthy items first
  • No food stored in your office
  • Don’t eat off of other people’s plates

I think you will find Mindless Eating an entertaining read and it will help you to avoid some of the traps that we all fall into that cause us to eat more than we should.

I’ll cover one more diet book selection in tomorrow’s post.
