Sudden Realization! I Was Fat!

Mike 1994Over the past several years, I’ve lost a lot of weight.  Not all at once, but gradually.  I’ve hit several plateaus along the way. The other day I realized something.  I used to be fat!

About 15 years ago, I hit my peak weight.  I weighed a little over 210 lbs (for reference, I’m about 6’ 1” tall) .  I was living in Singapore.  The food was great.  I was traveling all the time, all over Asia.  It was hard to fit in any exercise.  It was so hot and humid in Singapore that if I didn’t go running at 5:30 AM in the Botanic Gardens, there was almost no chance I’d do it later in the day.

Mike 2009Since returning to the U.S. in 1995, I’ve improved my diet and increased the amount of running that I do.  I now weigh about 165 lbs, more than 45 lbs (or over 20%) less than my peak weight.  In fact, I haven’t been this light since I got out of college, more than 30 years ago.

I’m not obsessed with my weight, but I do weigh myself every day on a bodyfat scale.  It helps me to monitor my food intake, the amount of exercise I’m getting, and my hydration level.

I try to eat a healthy diet and keep myself fueled for long runs.  I will probably try to lose a few more pounds gradually over the next year or so.

What’s your weight loss story?  What has worked for you? Tell me in the comments.
