Ultrarunner Scott Jurek to Attempt World Record Run
Scott Jurek, who won the Western States 100 mile race an unprecedented 7 consecutive times and who set an American record of 165.7 miles for the 24 hour run last May, is gearing up for an attempt to break Yiannis Kouros’ 24 hour run world record of 188.6 miles.
When I talked to Jurek recently, he said that he was still learning how to race the 24 hour run format, and plans a couple of 24 hour runs on both track and road courses before going for the record.
Scott is also planning to race in the Ultra-Trail Mt. Blanc (UTMB) in August, one of the world’s toughest ultramarathon courses. He has run this race three times, but only finished it once. He was disappointed when the 2010 race, in which he was entered, was cancelled due to severe weather.
Scott said that he thinks that “anybody can do an ultramarathon”, even on low mileage of 30-40 miles per week. Successful ultramarathoning, according to Jurek, comes down to four things:
- Being able to handle the muscular fatigue
- Being able to eat and drink on the run
- Knowing how hard to push
- Being mentally strong
Jurek is currently writing a book entitled, Eat and Run, on ultramarathoning, including recipes and diet information. Scott is a vegan and likes to cook, so this should be an interesting book. It is scheduled to be published in Spring 2012.
Although he says he is “not a big supplement guy” and tries to stick to eating real food both on and off the course, he does drink Cheribundi tart cherry juice twice a day. Research on tart cherry juice has convinced him that its anti-inflammatory properties help with recovery from tough workouts and races. Unlike some ultramarathoners, Jurek doesn’t use ibuprofen.
Cheribundi is made from real juice and not a concentrate. Some studies have shown that the beneficial effects of tart cherry juice are reduced by the process of making juice concentrate.
