Are You Hooked on Vitamin I?
Some endurance athletes try to boost their performance by taking ibuprofen (Vitamin I) or other anti-inflammatory drugs. The problem is that these drugs prevent the body from producing prostaglandins, which regulate the contraction and relaxation of muscle tissue.
Recent studies have found little performance benefit from taking ibuprofen. In fact, by masking pain they can actually increase the risk of injury. Chemical markers indicating increased muscle cell damage have been found in athletes taking ibuprofen. In long distance events, ibuprofen combined with dehydration can also increase the risk of kidney failure.
So, save the Vitamin I for when you are really hurt. Don’t pop them like M&M’s.
